“Sounds of the Diaspora”

 Nishonda Millington

My name is Nishonda Millington and I am a student at MEC. My painting  “Sounds of the Diaspora” began as a simple sketch in my sketchbook since last year, but I finally finished it earlier this year. The inspiration behind this painting is sound and the concept of Synesthesia. This is the concept of seeing sound as colours. I interpret different genres of Black Diasporic music as different colours and shapes and that is the basis of the painting(s). From the bright pinks of 70s pop made by Donna Summer, to the deep green grunges of British garage punk music, every interpretation is welcome in assigning each colour to what the viewer imagines the sound to "look" like.
